The high enlightenment and the low-life of literature by Darnton?

I have read the this (not the entire book just the Hight Enlightenment and Low-life of literature part first chapter) and I don't understand it...could someone just walk me through this? I know it's on intellectual histories but I have no idea what the issues are...
