What's with NBA players not taking desperation shots at the end of quarters?

I notice players now sometimes not just throwing the ball at the basket - are they that concerned about shooting percentages? Only 2 things can happen - either the ball goes in or not, and sometimes you may get a lucky 3-pointer that could end up being the difference in the final score.
