I'm confused with the hypothetical scenario of the person traveling in a spaceship and coming back younger...?

That's the paradox, is that they would both be aging slower than the other. However, one is in a space ship. He has to slow down and stop eventually, turn around and come back. That is the difference between the two reference frames. The huge amount of acceleration required by one and not the other will affect time differently for each of them.
